Be the source the AI cites
A growing share of searches end in a generated answer rather than a list of links. When someone asks ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews for a supplier in your category, your business is either named or it is not. This is the work that decides which.
Search changed shape
People stopped typing keywords and started asking questions. The answer increasingly comes from a model, with a handful of cited sources. Being absent from those citations means being invisible on an entire channel.

Why this is not simply SEO again
The two overlap heavily and good SEO is a prerequisite. But ranking optimises for a list; citation optimises for extraction, and those reward different things.
Entity clarity
Models need to know unambiguously what your business is, what it does, where it operates and how it relates to other entities they already recognise. Vague positioning that a human reader forgives is fatal here.
Structured data and relationships
JSON-LD schemas that describe the organisation, its services, its people and its content, linked to each other with stable identifiers so the picture is coherent rather than a pile of disconnected facts.
Extractable content
Question-and-answer structure, definitions stated plainly, claims attached to sources. Content written so a specific paragraph can be lifted as an answer without losing its meaning.
Corroboration across the web
Consistent facts about your business wherever it appears — directories, profiles, publications, review platforms. Contradictions between sources reduce a model's confidence in citing you at all.

Questions about AI visibility
Is AI visibility actually different from SEO?
They overlap but they are not the same. Classic SEO optimises for a ranked list of ten blue links. Generative engines synthesise one answer and cite a handful of sources.
Getting cited depends on things ranking does not always reward: unambiguous entity definitions, structured data the model can parse, content written in extractable question-and-answer form, and consistent facts about your business across the web.
Which engines does this cover?
ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Claude. The underlying work is largely shared — they all reward clear entities, clean structure and citable sources — but each is monitored separately because each behaves differently.
How do you measure something like this?
By running a fixed set of buying-intent prompts against each engine on a schedule and recording whether you appear, how you are described, and who is cited instead of you.
It is not a rank tracker and it should not pretend to be one. It is a coverage report that shows movement over months.
Is it worth doing if I am a small business?
It depends on whether your buyers ask questions before they buy. If people research suppliers, compare options or ask for recommendations in your category, then those conversations are increasingly happening inside an AI tool where you are either mentioned or you are not.
If your customers find you by walking past the shop, spend the money elsewhere.
Tell me what you are trying to sell
Thirty minutes, no pitch deck. You describe the business, I tell you what I would build, roughly what it costs, and whether it is worth doing at all.
